Anger management

Source SM Recap: Volume #4

Teaching Series: "Doin Work"

Main Teaching point: Everyone gets angry, but not everyone gets angry about things that matter.

Length of service: 55 minutes. 2 separate services for middle and high school.

Message Explanation: Everyone gets angry, but not everyone gets angry about things that matter. “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. James 1:19.
Anger defined - A God-given emotional response usually tied to a goal, value or expectation. It usually ignites when we feel hurt or rejected. Anger is a warning light built-in by God. “A fool gives full vent to anger, but a wise person quietly holds it back” Proverbs 29:11. Anger uncontrolled will control you. And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.”Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil” Ephesians 4:27.

How do we overcome anger?
1. Listen when someone else is talking. (v.19)
2. Be slow to speak. “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” Proverbs 12:18.
3. Avoid giving into anger. “Human angerdoes not produce the righteousnessGod desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls” James 1:20-21.  You cannot control what others say or do, but you can always control how you respond. Humility is the attitude we need to accept God’s truth into our hearts. What should upset us is the people who die without Christ everyday. Everyone gets angry, but not everyone gets angry about things that matter.
