I remember when Facebook first showed up on the Internet. It was in college and it was a new phenomenon. You could see other students at the college online! You could post whatever it was that you were doing or you would do that day.

But it was strange to post a picture of yourself earlier on in those days. It felt kind of narcissistic to post a picture of yourself in a somewhat unnatural pose. Now fast forward to 2014 and selfie is an actual word added into the English dictionary!

Disclaimer: I do not believe a picture of yourself is wrong. I just would ask that people stop taking pictures of themselves in the bathroom making "duck faces." Please...stop it. :)

It is difficult to see tangible evidence of humility in the world today. We are inundated with social media and the desire to be noticed, seen and liked.

True greatness is marked by humility. Have you noticed the difference between cats and dogs?
Dogs: My dog Heidi is a golden lab. She is a great dog. She is always happy to see me when I walk into the door. When I reach down to pet her, Heidi believes I’m the master!

Cats: But have you ever reached down to pet a cat? When you do, the cat believes that IT is the MASTER of the universe!

Even though Jesus was God on earth, he chose to be humble.

Being Humble is to realize that we are nothing without God. Humility is accepting ourselves as we are really are before God. How are you doing on humility? Here are a few questions to ask yourself?

Do I continually think about myself?
Do I continually talk about myself?
Do my stories I tell only involve my accolades and myself?

We should imitate the humility of Jesus to others:
“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.” Philippians 2:3-8

Jesus was God but He didn’t let that stop him from becoming a servant. He humbled himself even to the point of death on the cross. The Roman crucifixion was the most degrading deaths in human history. It was a death for hardened criminals.

Jesus was the opposite of arrogant. He had no throne or armed guards. He arrived in a humble manger in a small town. He did not live his life trying to outdo other people. He was willing to let His Heavenly Father be #1.

Why would Jesus do this?

He was obedient to His Father. He did whatever would please His Heavenly Father. He was humble. The only reason that we are given true life is that Jesus gave His life for us.

The deeper the humility, the more God can use you. You overcome pride by coming under the leadership of God. In this position is where you will find His blessing!

Jesus literally emptied himself of self. It was his trademark. It was what He was known for.

What will we be known for in this generation?
