Purpose of reading the Bible

The Bible is Much More than a Book

The Bible is FOR us, but it is not necessarily ABOUT us.This simple statement clears up the motive for reading the Bible.  It is easy to get into the mindset that to read the Bible, it is all about finding something that fits your life.  The true way to experience the Bible is to want to get to know the heart of God and then apply it to your life.  The Bible is not just a "self-help" or "list of to-do's" that we read, but it is living and active.

I'm sure we would all agree that we need to read the Bible more this year.

The reason the Bible is so vital to our lives is because it reveals the heart of God.

2 Timothy 3:16-17: "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.  God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work."

How we view scripture leads to how we read and apply scripture.  - Ask God first to speak to you as you read it. - Obey God in what He speaks to you in your reading. - Spend time meditating on it throughout the day. - Pray that His Word would change you in your thoughts, attitudes and actions.

What do you think about the motive of reading the Bible? Is how we view the Bible just as important as reading the Bible?
