Teaching series: Rhythm – Week 3 “Passion to Serve”
Source Schedule Breakdown: Wednesdays @ 6:15-8:30pm. We have separate teaching time for middle school and high school. We have a unified worship experience with the band in the middle of the evening. We have small groups immediately after the teaching and response by grade and gender.
Main Thought: Using all my influence to serve others with the love of Jesus
Scripture: Mark 9:33-35, Mark 10:35-45, Philippians 2:3-4
Message Explanation: Our generation is asking this question:
How should I live?
- The world says: Seek power, money, fame, pleasure (eat, drink, and be merry)
- The Bible says: In Love and service to God and mankind (Matt. 5:43-48, Deut. 28, Philippians 2:5-11).
Jesus said that the two greatest commands in the entire Bible—the two that all the others hang on—are loving God and love people. Selfishness comes natural but selflessness must be learned.
Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Mark 9:35
Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:43-45 (NIV)
How do we influence others by serving?
1. Considers others before yourself
Philippians 2:3-4 says, “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
2. Give selfless love to a selfish world
- Serving with love is a CHOICE: A servant asks, “What can I do for others?” instead of “What can they do for me?
- Servant leadership invites relationship. Leadership begins at the feet of Jesus. Source student ministry is a launching pad for ministry!
Quote: “Father, make of me a crisis man. Bring those I contact to decision. Let me not be a milepost on a single road; make me a fork, that men must turn one way or another on facing Christ in me.” Jim Eliot. Are you a mile-marker or a fork in the road?
Colossians 3:23-24 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” This week, we know deep down on what God is leading you to do, but what matters most is will we follow through with what He is telling us to do? Serving God is where the most growth occurs.
Element of fun: Middle school game: "Popcorn." Everyone mills around in the playing area, you could be moving to music, or whatever, so long as people are moving around. The leader then calls out a number and an object. Participants quickly form groups of that number, then use their bodies to make the object. For example, "2, rocking chair!" and you'll suddenly see pairs forming themselves into rocking chairs.
Once everyone has made their object, then it's time for more mingling and the next object!
Here are some ideas for objects: washing machine, toaster, car, piano, waterfall, eagle, elephant, and church building, etc.

Favorite Moment: Hearing about students excited about going on the Costa Rica mission trip on spring break 2013! It was great to see students respond to Christ and sharing their excitement for baptism on September 9th!
What’s Next: We have the back to school bash next Wednesday night! We will have life-sized angry birds, Tekulve as a guest artist and the gospel being communicated!
