Leadership

Creating Postive Change

Leadership is filled with everyday struggles, questions and problems. One of the most important tasks as a leader is to present tension as a positive aspect to grow people to maturity. Change is not a goal for many people as they wake up and go on with the day. Humans are creatures of comfort and are not geared for change on a daily basis. Without tension through a diet, exercise or positive choice, it will take effort and sometimes pain to become stronger. Leaders who build on change will be able to communicate God’s vision before it comes in a way that captures the essence of trust. Leader in Trouble

Leaders must stay vigilant and make sure they are able to sense trouble before it becomes a crisis. Maxwell says, “Everything rises and falls on leadership!”[1] Leaders must be the forerunners in bringing about positive, Christ-centered decisions. Change is inevitable in a growing organization and leaders must be able to communicate in a way that people can connect with the vision. Change can happen negatively or positively. Leaders can also handle change with a negative attitude instead of looking at it in a growing attitude. Change can cost, especially if it takes months or even years to achieve.

A leader that is in trouble will look at a situation that needs change and will fear the outcome. A godly leader continues to put their faith in God throughout any situation and continually seeks God’s wisdom before making decisions. Maxwell explains the Law of the Lid to leaders during a time of change.[2] The leader must change and grow first in order to lead the people to where God is leading. It is crucial for a leader to adequately communicate the direction of change in order to help people work through the fear and uncertainty that comes with it.

Relationships are key to a leader being able to make wise choices. Leaders are to be students of their followers in such a way that helps foresee all possible scenarios to them making choices. Organization of the small tasks is important for people to understand the overall picture of the future. Making changes takes effort, patience, and time in order to see lives changed in the future.[3]

Leader as change agent

Leadership must be ahead of the change before it occurs. It is wise to think through the pros and cons of any situation, especially when it comes to making changes. Leadership must be able to explain the need for change so that people can understand the motivation. If a leader does not see their personal need for change, the overall mission of the organization will become stagnant. Leaders are learners in all aspects of life. If a leader loses sight of knowing their own personal struggles, weaknesses and needs, the people will not understand God’s plan clearly. It begins and ends with leaders that are willing to motivate and encourage people to grow beyond mediocrity. Influencing people to be passionate about growth is one of the most important tasks of a leader.

Why people resist change

Change revolves around being uncertain of the future. People struggle with a need to change most of the time.[4] Fear is one of the biggest struggles for people to take a step towards change. Change can be painful internally and externally. Pride is one of the largest obstacles to face in every person’s heart. Only when a leader and people can admit they need to change will it become successful. Leaders must help explain the need for change in the midst of planning and making decisions for the overall purpose. Clear steps need to be outlined by the leader to aid in communicating to people’s skepticism to change. Leaders are to help people see the vision of making changes for the glory of God.

Creating a climate for change

People are continually looking at situations as a way to maintain the status quo. Comparing oneself to another is unwise in making changes to the overall organization. Humble leaders gain people’s hearts to be open to change. If a leader is not willing to struggle through the choices for change, the people will not see why they must change. Leadership must set the tone for change. Attitude is an important aspect to the environment of a changing organization. Through building relationships and trust, people will follow wise leaders.[5]

Building a culture of change takes time through making personal choices as a leader to challenge and encourage people to reach their potential. Seeing tough decisions as opportunities is a key building block to seeing growth in an organization. Building consensus among key leaders is vital to gaining support before the change becomes public.[6] Once people own the vision for change, it becomes believable for the organization.

Change produces the opportunity for growth. Leaders are to face change with an attitude of hope and determination for success. It takes time and patience with people and situations, but in the end it can lead to sustained improvement. Change must happen for an organization to see a lifetime of growth and prosperity. Leadership must continually challenge and encourage people to seek God’s best for life.

Leadership Spotlight - Hezekiah

Leadership is not complete without the nature of crisis. Knowing how to understand and deal with crisis is important in the daily life of a leader. Crisis cannot be avoided in leadership and there must be an effective plan in place to resolve it.  The nature of the current recession and troubles in the economy, calls for leadership to have answers that will be built upon wise principles. A leader can either crumble under the pressure or rally their followers to see the darkest times as an opportunity, rather than give into discouragement. Scripture has numerous stories of people who face insurmountable odds and respond with solid faith in God. The story of Hezekiah is one that speaks of the truth of God working through a person during a time of crisis and achieving success. Hezekiah faced a pivotal time in the Israelite’s history. Hezekiah was the thirteenth king of Judah and had inherited a troubled people with many problems and struggles. Hezekiah began to lead as king at a young age.[1] Although he was faced with a tough situation, he was set to handle the task. The crisis that Hezekiah faced was not in his own kingdom but was an attack of the Sennacherib King of Assyria.[2] One of the main reasons there was fear among the people was due to Hezekiah’s father Ahaz making unwise choices leading up to his death. Hezekiah had a choice to continue leading in a dysfunctional way or live the alternative of leading with character. One key leadership ability, is making the decision to respond rather than react to a crisis. Hezekiah did not waste time arguing with the enemy. Leadership must always look at arguments as detrimental to finding the solution during a crisis. Hezekiah realized that in order to achieve success there would need to be thoughtful and wise steps to defeat the enemy.

Hezekiah was facing the compounding issues of idolatry, hedonistic rituals, and sacrifices. He went to the source of His strength to face the crisis.[3] Ahaz, his father had allowed the people to shift away from worshiping Yahweh as the only true God. A leader must not rely upon one individual’s strength, but realize that the foundation must be built upon God working in and through each crisis. Not only did Hezekiah turn to God for help, but went to Isaiah for wise counsel on how to handle the surmounting crisis that was on the horizon. The wisdom that he received helped him adequately prepare for battle. The amazing power of God was seen through the angel of the Lord killing the entire army that was bent upon destroying Hezekiah’s plan.[4] A leader must handle their emotions before they make decisions. Dealing with crisis can evoke various emotions and in order to make wise choices, there must be a plan to handle them with integrity.

Leadership must be focused upon more than one person. Hezekiah set an example of leadership that focused upon utilizing other people to live out their abilities to achieve success. Many leaders focus all of the attention upon their own abilities and gifts. When a leader thinks they are the answer for all questions and needs, the leader will begin to slowly destroy relationships due to pride. Hezekiah displayed an attitude of humility and honor by bringing the people of Israel out of a tough situation and set back on track by obeying God. In order to effectively lead, a team needs to be in place to lead through their skill set. Hezekiah used the law of problem solving and was able to make decisions based upon obedience to God and not unto man. Hezekiah did not let the crisis rule his decision-making process but came up with solutions.

Hezekiah faced a personal crisis that was about to take his life. He cried out to God to heal him and give him more time to lead. God healed him from his sickness but his last few years he began to make unwise decisions that future generations would have to clean up. His last years led to haphazard decisions that would set up an opportunity for the Babylonians to overtake the Israelites in the future.[5] The leader that led through tough times was now relying upon human strength and not God’s power. Hezekiah’s choleric temperament came out by focusing upon his past successes and led to opening up his palace to Babylonian leaders. Hezekiah was only thinking of the current crisis and missed the opportunity to safeguard the future by making decisions that were wise.

Leadership must be built upon dealing with problems that come with procedures put in place before the crisis arises. Casting vision is not only communicating verbally but also thinking ahead of the obstacles and ways to find solutions. Hezekiah was able to build a healthy kingdom but over time lost sight of his tenacity to stick to priorities. Leadership is not a sprint but it is a marathon. Hezekiah was a successful leader in a crisis and revealed a heart for following God’s commands.

Leaders need to be aware that decisions that are made not only affect the current situation but also future generations. Healthy leadership keeps humility in the forefront of their mind and heart. Hezekiah’s successes were similar to trophies in his life and through time, his desire to keep his walk with God pure became less of a priority. Character and self-evaluation is needed on a regular basis to keep a person focused upon what is most important. When a leader becomes comfortable, the chance of mediocrity and apathy begins to erode excellence. Instead of looking back at past victories, leaders must keep focusing on the future and all the wonders God wants to fulfill.[6]

Leadership is a gift from God. Each leader must never forget the motivation of following God’s purposes. Hezekiah made many wise decisions for the Israelites but his last years were as if he retired in his passion for excellence. Effective leaders must have a daily, dependent walk with God. When a leader stays dependent upon God, the crisis will bring glory to God.

[2] “Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah that Sennacherib King of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.” Isaiah 36:1

[4] “And the angel of the Lord went out and struck down a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12-14

Leadership Spotlight - Ezra

A Series on Biblical Leaders The Spiritual Leader

Leaders have an important task of leading people into a growing relationship with God. Although there are many types of leaders throughout the social, political and military world, none is more important than spiritual leadership. What makes a spiritual leader? How does a leader spur people on to become stronger in their Christian lives and outreach to others? Ezra is the biblical example of spiritual leadership through his ministry while on earth. Throughout scripture many leaders face trials, temptations and struggles. Ezra’s life exemplified the desire to take people from mediocrity to an experiential passion for God. Spiritual leadership is God-given and carries considerable responsibility to be carried to fruition.

Ezra was a scribe that was in place during the post-exile period for the Jewish nation. His job was to be a student of scripture and to make it known to others. His gift of accuracy was important to communicate the detailed vision of God to the people. Ezra was able to work under the authority of the king and fulfill the specific job of teaching biblical principles.[1] God uses a leader with specific abilities and gifts to lead with excellence. The spiritual leader takes it a step further than human abilities and is used beyond mediocrity through the power of God’s Spirit. The leader that is invested in listening to God’s direction will continually make wise choices. Ezra was able to successfully influence people to seek God through his own example of being a spiritual leader.

A spiritual leader builds a life filled with faith in God to provide all that is needed to fulfill the vision. Ezra made a priority of trusting God to supply all the necessities for the challenged that were evident. Prayer and fasting is at the heart of humbling oneself under the hand of God. Ezra taught through example that seeking after God when the times were tough was the most important part of leadership.[2] Leading through tough times develops character and wisdom in the heart of people. Ezra realized that leadership is not a one-person show, but it takes a team to be productive.

A dedicated leader must learn to lead themselves personally before they can be effective. Ezra revealed his desire to not only see the people of Israel to be successful, but himself to be faithful. Leadership is not a sprint, but a marathon focused upon the finish line. In order to be successful in leading people spiritually, one must become dependant upon God. Ezra’s life was focused upon growth. He had the ability to recognize his gifting and role in serving God. He prepared his heart to seek after God and communicate the truth of scripture to the people.[3] Not only did Ezra want to seek God personally, but he began a revival through urging the Israelites to repent of their sin corporately. Ezra began to explain the Law of God so that people would understand how to obey.[4] A spiritual leader moves past the outward and focuses on the heart of the people.

Leadership ability is found in many people across broad jobs and careers. A spiritual leader helps people understand and focus on eternity. Ezra was not focused only upon the temporary, but on leading the people to make commitments to God. Spiritual leaders communicate practical ways for people to live out God’s Word. Many people are unsure of how to find God’s purpose for their life. Spiritual leaders are clear on the application of scripture to produce devoted followers of Christ. God continually calls his children to live out love for all people. The desire of spiritual leaders is to join God in what He is already doing in the world.

Cultivating relationships is a truth that each leader must continually focus upon if there will be life-change in others. Ezra was diligent to do the small things so that the big picture of God’s vision would come to pass. The process of leading is taking each small step and completing it with excellence until God finishes the work. Christ-like love is needed to build relationships that are strong and will last. God’s unconditional love for people must be the motivating force behind spiritual leadership. People are the focus and whether or not they have a relationship with Christ must become the priority. Ezra focused upon communicating the information of the Bible in order to see transformation. Ezra’s passion was to call the people of Israel to commitment.

God uses specific people to lead in a way that draws people out of their comfort zone. Growth occurs when people are stretched and all that is left is the sufficiency of Christ. The church today needs leaders who will speak of the truth of God. Ezra exemplified the reality of eternity throughout his ministry. Ezra knew the importance of asking for God’s strength and blessing in order to be effective in leading people spiritually.[5] In the darkest of times, God’s voice is many times heard louder than in easy circumstances. Ezra was able to use the tough times that the Israelites faced and helped focus their hearts upon repentance and faith in God alone.

Leaders are continually working with people. Understanding the needs and issues that each person faces on a daily basis is important in order to lead effectively. A wise leader never manipulates people but creatively casts God’s vision. Ezra was a great example of a spiritual leader who led with the heart of Christ. Spiritual leadership moves people onward to the call of God no matter the cost. Spiritual leadership is a God-given ability to follow the Holy Spirit and help people to grow in their relationship with Christ.
